Walnut Park Montessori, designed for children aged 18 months through 3 years and a Jackson Walnut School, fosters independence, concentration, and critical thinking in classroom environments. Students at Walnut Park complete a three-year primary program, including kindergarten, before moving to Grade 1 at Jackson Elementary.
The facility offers a gymnasium, a school library, gardens and an outdoor natural playground. The school is accredited by the American Montessori Society.
Philosophy
Walnut Park has implemented the Montessori method of teaching for more than 50 years. Multi-age classroom communities engender respect and a promise of safety, offering children a balance of structure and freedom. Younger children learn from older peers, who in turn take pride in their role as leaders and role models. Faculty, referred to as guides, invite children to learn by exploring and to develop a sense of independence and order.
Toddler Program
The Montessori toddler program was added in 2013 with an objective to set the stage for successful experiences in primary classrooms. The toddler program fosters exploration, independence, and communication skills. The half day morning program is offered on a 2, 3, or 5 day per week schedule.
Early Childhood
The primary classroom for children aged 3-6 years provides concrete multi-sensory learning opportunities. The school allows freedom of choice and movement and the classroom provides defined learning areas while remaining open to social interaction and physical exercise. Children are engaged in various activities such as music, song and storytelling.
Extended Hours
After-school care is available for children of all ages until 6:00pm. Children will engage in a variety of activities, including arts and crafts, cooking, outdoor play, science experiments, and sports. Additionally, families may take advantage of programs offered during school half-days and vacation-days.
