Hi parents. We have a work related move coming up and just went under contract on a house in Newton. Newton Center if that makes a difference to any responses. I'd love to hear your recommendations for private vs public schools for the kids (7 and 11), restaurants, resources, getaways.... We are excited, nervous and a family of 4 Californians figuring out how to get ready for cold winters!

Welcome!! You will love it here. We live in Newton Center, near Mason Rice. The public schools are great. Lovely teachers, everyone is very kind. The community is supportive and very family oriented. I think your kids will be very happy with the schools. There are also plenty of private schools nearby - Chestnut Hill, Beaver Country, Fessenden (boys), Country Day, the list is long. It really depends on your needs for deciding private vs public. Newton North and South are both amazing high schools. High percentage of students accepted to 4 yr universities, including the Ivys.

There a many great restaurants in Newton Center. A big parking lot in the center, you can walk from there. Fairs for the kids throughout the year. Crystal Lake swimming in the summer. Skiing only a quick drive away throughout winter. It's cold, but lots to do throughout the winter.

Good luck with the move!

Hi! Our kids attended public for a few years, then we moved them to one of the private schools. The Newton public schools are fine, some in better shape (newer buildings) than others. They seem to teach to the lowest denominator because the decisions and policies are very equity driven. They don't want to leave anyone out, which is a cute ideal but the result is they leave out so many kids that could achieve more. If your kids have the ability and you want them to be challenged academically, visit as many of the private schools as possible.

BB&N, Chestnut Hill, Beaver Country Day, Nobles, Roxbury Latin, Meadowbrook, Tenacres, many more larger and smaller Montessori, academic, sports, religious affiliations, etc. It may be too late to apply for the start of this year, but you'll be in a good position to apply prior to decisions next May.

the public schools in newton are top notch. yes there are advantages of private and the private schhools in the area are good. really good. but the public system follows a high level curriculum and the teachers are always available to discuss progress as well as concerns. you're probably near mason rice, bowen, brown (middle). i've heard great things about all. our kids were on the other side of newton at angier, another great (new construction) school. the remote learning could have been better, but that was new for thousands of public schools across the country. i expect angier will have improved the technology and plans for the upcoming school year.

Check out Tenacre. Our son attends and loves it. The staff and the teachers are all really great. As a parent I love the organized administration and the clear communication. We know what our kids are working on throughout the year, what to expect, their academic goals and their progress against the goals. In our experience the outstanding administration at Tenacre has far exceeded what the public school system is able to achieve. Tenacre also has a wonderful summer camp for the kids.

The school is in Wellesley, but the commute is manageable and it's worth it for the academic and overall experience.

And the schools listed here also offer amazing summer camps. Our kids went to both Beaver Summer Camp and Fessenden. Personally, I liked Beaver better because they offer more activities for the kids to choose. The kids loved both.
